Can I Benefit From Eyelid Surgery?

As we age, genetics, habits, environment, and gravity all play a role in how we appear.

As our muscles begin to weaken, wrinkles, fine lines, creases, and puffy, sagging lower eyelids can develop. Sometimes, excess skin on the upper eyelids can also develop, which leads to vision impairment.

These conditions cause a tired or frustrated appearance, even when we feel calm and well rested.

Eyelid lift surgery, also referred to as blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to correct signs of aging around the eyes and reduce obstructed vision caused by loose eyelid skin.

By removing excess fat and skin, and repositioning the remaining tissue around the eyes, the face can appear refreshed and rejuvenated.

What Are My Options?

There are two approaches to address signs of aging around the eyes. Your concerns and preferences will determine which method can achieve your desired results.

During your consultation, Dr. Wald will analyze your medical history, facial concerns, aesthetic preferences, and desired results to determine which approach can benefit you.

Traditional

Traditional blepharoplasty makes an incision along the upper eyelid crease that is concealed by the natural eyelid contours. If the lower eyelid is also being corrected, an incision is made across the eyelash line, which is hidden by the eyelashes.

Transconjunctival

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty creates an incision inside the lower eyelid. This approach removes excess fat but is only appropriate for patients who do not also have excess skin. There is no visible scarring, as incisions are made within the eyelid.

Non-surgical

If you have mild wrinkling around your eyes, then laser resurfacing may be used as a less-invasive alternative to address your eyelid concerns. Laser skin resurfacing tightens the dermis in targeted locations, providing a tighter, smoother skin surface.

What Does Eyelid Surgery Entail?

Dr. Robert Wald uses local anesthesia around the eyes, along with intravenous (IV) sedation to ensure comfort and relaxation during the procedure. The selected incision technique is utilized, and excess fat and/or skin are removed. Muscles and underlying tissue are repositioned as needed, and the incisions are closed.

Combining Procedures With Your Eyelid Surgery

Patients who have multiple facial concerns can combine other procedures with their eyelid surgery. When performed in conjunction with eyelid surgery, combining procedures can help save money, reduce the recovery time, and avoid repeat anesthesia use.

Along with an eyelid lift, Dr. Wald commonly performs a facelift or brow lift to provide further balance to the face and improve the appearance of nasolabial folds. You also have the option to include a forehead lift or mini-facelift to address multiple facial concerns at once.

Your Recovery

Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis at our surgical center, so you will need to have a friend or loved one drive you home after your surgery and take care of you for the next day or two while you relax.

Dr. Wald will provide aftercare instructions, which should be followed carefully. Rest, relax, and take it easy for the first few days while you recuperate.

What Results Can I Expect?

Without excess eyelid skin or fat, patients appear more refreshed and relaxed. Fat and excess skin are removed, so most patients appear youthful with smoother skin and improved vision.

Orange County Facelifts-Not all the same

Today, economics are driving our spending. We are all concerned about our families and we all have been affected by the world downturn. As a result of these circumstances, we are all looking for the best deal and a quick fix that will correct our aging faces.

There are multiple methods to improve our facial appearance. Today, we see many TV commercials and magazine ads showing wonderful results of facelifts that are inexpensive and require minimal surgery. I would caution consumers about surgeries that promise these great results. Good surgery requires time, expense and good surgical skill. Remember, it is your face that you are improving. Bad results can occur that may not be correctable. Your financial investment in your face will be worth every dollar you spend. Please do your research well.

Facelift Surgery Cost in Orange County

Average Cost of Facelift Surgery

facelift surgery costFacelift costs can be very confusing to most patients. The reason for this is that facial rejuvenation is complicated and includes many of the aging characteristics.

A facelift is a surgical procedure to improve the visible signs of aging in the face and neck.  These signs include sagging in the mid face, fat that has fallen or is displaced, loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw, and deep creases below the lower eyelids.

A facelift does not include correction of the forehead, brow position, eyelids, wrinkles around the mouth and eyelids, and general fat loss in the lips and in the face.  To correct these problems a browlift,  blepharoplasties, laser therapy, and fat injections would be required. These procedures are in addition to a facelift and would be priced separately.

Also, facelifts vary in their complexity and whether they correct only the mid face or mid face and neck.  Most mid facelifts correct the cheeks and jowls. A more extensive facelift would also correct the neck and involve more incisions and time.  A mini facelift (mid facelift) involves less incisions and time, and would cost less than a full face and neck lift.

facelift costCosts for a facelift vary on geographic location of the office and the doctor’s experience. It is important to know what is involved with a facelift fee. There are many costs involved with facelift surgery. These include:

– Surgeon’s fee

-Hospital or surgical facility costs

-Anesthesia fees

-Preoperative medical costs

-Medication fees

-Post-surgical garments

-Aftercare fees

As I have described, facelift surgery depends on the technique used and the extent of the procedure. In general, a minor (mini) facelift will cost $11,000, on average. Standard (full) face and neck lift surgery, on average, will cost $13,500. A mid facelift will cost $10,000, on average. A lower facelift, on average, will cost $11,000.

In addition, eyelid surgery, brow lift surgery, facial liposuction, fat injections, or laser therapy added at the same time of a facelift will increase the cost of treatment.  Patients should realize that numerous financing plans are available for this surgery and can make this procedure quite affordable.  Many plastic surgery offices offer facelift financing plans and accept a variety of payment options.

When choosing a plastic surgeon for facelift surgery, remember that the surgeons experience and your comfort with him or her are just as important as the final cost of the surgery.

Facial Harmony

Our Neck is often one of the first areas to show early signs of aging. Tissue changes include loose, wrinkled or hanging skin. Hereditary conditions cause excess fat in the neck creating  a double chin. The combination of tissue decent, fat accumulation and exposure to the elements can have a profound impact on neck contour and skin quality. When the skin becomes slack under the chin, it can create an unattractive “waddle” or “turkey” neck. Occasionally the muscles of the neck become more prominent and sometimes appear as vertical cords. Loose skin and fat deposits can also produce jowls or jowl line contour deformities.

In order to correct these problems, surgical intervention is required. Frequently a full face lift is most effective. My patients are shown that the face and neck are in continuity and in order to achieve facial harmony, neck and facial tissues must be tightened together.

However depending on the degree of neck and facial skin aging, selected patients can undergo isolated neck lifts. In these patients, hair line incisions are made behind the ear which is unnoticeable. Some patients with minor degree of neck loosening can undergo temporal or short scar lifts. Essential to these procedures are the patient’s desires and expectations. Patients with neck fullness can undergo liposuction alone which allows for secondary skin contraction and tightening.

The Right Facial Rejuvenation Procedure

I see many patients that desire improvement in their faces. The most important aspect in my consultaion is listening to the patient. Some patients only request fillers, Botox or minor procedures to improve their wrinkles, deep lines or facial texture. Others prefer a more agressive approach that involves surgical correction. Every patient has certain goals. Depending on the amount of healing, “down time” and results, the surgeon should taper a facial plan that is appropriate for that person. The amount of improvement varies with each procedure. A competent surgeon will adjust their facial plan, according to the patient’s desires. The patients should be aware that plastic surgery is an art and over the years, different approaches are indicated.
