How to Select Your Breast Implant Size

Choosing the right implants for your breast augmentation surgery can be a difficult decision. It is important you understand all the factors involved to make an informed decision based on your specific needs and body type. In preparation for your breast augmentation, you will be presented with several implant options and choices. One of the most important decisions you will make is the size of your breast implants.

It is important to note that implants are not measured in cup size. Bra size can vary between manufacturers and locations, so measuring by cup size will give you an inaccurate measurement. Instead, breast implant size is measured in cubic centimeters, or CCs, to provide a universal measurement. The higher the CCs, the larger the breast implant size. Dr. Wald will evaluate your body shape, breast characteristics, and personal preferences to help determine the right implant size for you.

Why Should I Undergo Breast Augmentation Surgery?

  • To improve breast shape
  • To achieve a more feminine appearance
  • To increase self-confidence
  • To improve breast symmetry and balance
  • To look more youthful

What Should I Consider When Choosing My Breasts Implant Size?

Your Current Cup Size

When choosing the size of your breast implants, you should first consider your body shape and natural breast tissue. For women who have wide hips, choosing implants of a larger size can create an attractive hourglass shape that looks well balanced. On the other hand, women who desire “double D’s” or larger when they have a rectangular body type or narrow hips may find that their results will appear “too big.” Adjustments in implant dimensions or projection may need to be made to accommodate your chest size and give you the desired results.

Implant Shape and Profile

It is important to consider the implant shape and profile in addition to the size. High profile implants have a more significant forward projection and a narrower base width. These implants are best suited for women who have a smaller chest wall. Conversely, low profile implants have a lower forward projection and a wider base width. These implants can benefit women who have a broader chest wall. Anatomic qualities and personal preferences should also influence your selection of implants.

Performing the Rice Test

To determine what breast implant size is right for you at home, you should consider performing the Rice Test. The Rice Test is a convenient way to measure cup size in CCs. To perform the Rice Test, follow these steps:

  1. Fill a sandwich bag with rice
  2. Place sandwich bag in a bra of your desired size
  3. Remove the bag and measure the amount of rice

The Rice Test allows you to try multiple sizes to determine what breast implant size best fits your desired look.
