Breast Implant Removal

You may have been happy with the results of your breast augmentation for years, but now you might want your implants removed because of lifestyle changes, new stylistic preferences, or because you are simply tired of them. In some instances, you may need to have your implants removed due to complications, such as capsular contracture (the tightening of scar tissue around the implant) or an implant rupture. As a specialist in cosmetic surgery, Dr. Wald has many years of experience in successfully performing breast implant removal.

What Can Breast Implant Removal Address?

Asymmetrical Breasts

Over time, a woman’s breasts can change due to factors like pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. Breast implant removal can correct asymmetry of the breasts caused by physical changes after breast augmentation.

Preference Changes

The desire to remove your breast implants for aesthetic, stylistic, or functional reasons, or due to complications like implant rupture and capsular contracture, can be addressed with breast implant removal.

Physical Discomfort

Some women have a limited ability to enjoy certain activities due to the size and shape of their implants. Breast implant removal can provide relief and improve your overall quality of life.

Your Breast Implant Removal

During your consultation, Dr. Wald will go over your medical history, examine the condition of your breasts, and formulate a surgical plan that will best suit your needs. Dr. Wald performs breast implant removal as an outpatient procedure. General anesthesia will be used during your surgery to ensure your comfort and safety.

Incision

An incision is made under the lower fold of your breast or around the areola, depending on factors such as the size of your implants and the location of the incision used during your original augmentation surgery. Dr. Wald will discuss the best options with you during your consultation.

Removal

For some patients, simple removal of their breast implants is enough. For others, breast lift surgery may also be recommended. This will depend on the size of your implants and whether or not the weight of them has stretched the breast skin and tissues. The capsule of scar tissue around your implants will also be removed.

You’ve Just Had Breast Implant Removal, Now What?

Immediately After

After surgery, your breasts will be dressed with gauze or bandages and may need to have small drains placed. A compression garment will also be placed along the treated areas to reduce swelling and encourage a speedy recovery. The entire recovery process can last a few weeks or months. Dr. Wald will provide you with step-by-step pre- and post-operative instructions, which should be followed closely to help ensure a safe and easy recovery.

2 Weeks After

Most of the swelling and bruising will have subsided, and you will be able to return to work and light activities.

6 Weeks After

Your scars should begin to fade and will continue to do so for several months. Silicone sheets can also be applied to the incision sites to help with healing and minimize scar formation. You should be able to return to all normal activities after six weeks unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Wald.
