In my practice, I see a number of men in their 70’s and 80’s who develop a lot of loose skin under their chin. This deformity is commonly called a Turkey Wattle deformity. Most men of this age group do not want a facelift and want a simple procedure to correct this problem. This excess skin under the chin is of concern since this extra skin bulges over the shirt collar.
A simple operation to correct this problem is to directly remove the excess skin and fat from under the chin area. A small rotation of the neck skin is also performed in the neck crease (Z-plasty). The only downside to this procedure is the scar in the middle of the neck. This scar usually heals beautifully and blends well. Most men would prefer to have this scar over a larger operation. This procedure is done under local anesthesia and only 3 days of downtime.

Cosmetic Surgery and Safety Concerns
I recently had a facelift patient tell me how wonderful it was that she was able to have her surgery in Mesa Surgicenter (AAAASF/Medicare Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This is located adjacent to our office. She found this facility to be extremely comfortable and personal. “Being in this environment and not in a hospital, I felt like there was less chance of an infection. The team at the surgicenter was extremely professional and the Board Certified anesthesiologist was outstanding. It was comforting to know that these individuals specialize in this kind of surgery and are aware of all aspects of cosmetic surgery.”
It is important for a patient to find out where their surgery will be performed. Not all surgery centers are accredited. A surgery center must undergo frequent evaluations by state inspectors similar to a hospital to become accredited. A certified facility will also be able to perform general anesthesia.
In my opinion, it is important to have a board certified anesthesiologist performing the general anesthesia. Safety is of utmost importance and higher costs may be involved to achieve this standard.

Breast Asymmetry Surgeon

Actual patient with corrected breast asymmetry.
According to the statistics in Plastic Surgery, 88% of all women have different size breasts, also known as breast asymmetry. This includes breasts that are different shapes and sizes, nipples and inframammary creases at different levels, and variability in cleavages. When I see a woman in consultation, it is very important that I relate these anatomical features to her. Because it is impossible to correct all these differences, a surgical plan is developoed according to the woman’s priorities. I have found a careful and well thought out surgical plan enables my patients to have excellent results and an improvement in their preoperative asymmetries. Even though breast enlargement is a more common procedure, breast reduction is a life changing surgery. Large, pendulous breasts can be the curse of numerous health conditions including back, neck, and shoulder pain. Skin rashes can occur beneath the breasts and grooves can occur in the shoulder from bra straps. Postural problems can occur which may impair physical activity.
By removing breast tissue, weight is removed from the chest relieving most of the woman’s discomfort. This surgery will allow the woman to stand upright, exercise normally and be without constant pain. This surgery creates one of the most immediate and dramatic changes in body image. The breasts become smaller, lighter, firmer, and in better proportion to the rest of the body. Clothing choices are expanded. In most cases, normal nipple sensation and the ability to breast feed will be maintianed.
In my experience, I have found this to be one of my most satisfying surgeries.

Today, economics are driving our spending. We are all concerned about our families and we all have been affected by the world downturn. As a result of these circumstances, we are all looking for the best deal and a quick fix that will correct our aging faces.
There are multiple methods to improve our facial appearance. Today, we see many TV commercials and magazine ads showing wonderful results of facelifts that are inexpensive and require minimal surgery. I would caution consumers about surgeries that promise these great results. Good surgery requires time, expense and good surgical skill. Remember, it is your face that you are improving. Bad results can occur that may not be correctable. Your financial investment in your face will be worth every dollar you spend. Please do your research well.
