Inverted Nipple Correction in Fullerton, CA

Banner_Gallery

Some women have nipples that are inverted or retracted, meaning they are withdrawn below the skin and don’t have normal protrusion. Inverted nipples can develop during early childhood, during breast development in puberty, or even later as an adult. While this condition can occur in both men and women, it is much more common in women. It also can range in severity, from mild cases to severe nipple inversion.

Women usually choose to correct their inverted nipple(s) for one of two reasons. First, if it’s a very obvious inversion, it can harm your self-esteem. Secondly, you may have difficulties breastfeeding if you don’t correct your inverted nipples.

Luckily, inverted nipple procedures are an easy and quick fix to this problem.

Am I a Candidate for Inverted Nipple Surgery?

Approximately two and 10 percent of women have at least one inverted nipple. For some women, inverted nipples are a result of breastfeeding and breast tissue diminishing. In rare cases, inverted nipples are a consequence of breast cancer.

Anyone with inverted nipples that cause embarrassment or difficulties breastfeeding may be eligible for inverted nipple surgery.

Patients might not be the right candidate if:

  • They are unwilling to give up smoking before the surgery (smoking can negatively impact skin recovery).
  • They have unrealistic expectations for the operation.
  • They have pre-existing health conditions (consult with your plastic surgeon for more information).

Additionally, if your inverted nipples appeared suddenly and without cause, you should consult with a breast specialist to confirm the cause isn’t an underlying medical condition.

Women looking to improve the appearance of their breast even more may want to consider nipple and areola reduction, breast augmentation surgery, or breast lift surgery.

How Is Inverted Nipple Surgery Performed?

A surgical procedure can be done to allow the nipples to project. The operation looks to release the underlying tissue and the transection of milk ducts. Surgery involves a small incision near the nipple to reduce some of the nipple attachments.

Patients are given local anesthesia or IV sedation.

What Is the Recovery After Inverted Nipple Surgery?

Inverted nipple surgery is typically very straightforward, and the patient can go home the same day. There may be some swelling and discomfort, but this pain can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Patients usually return in four to five days to remove their sutures.  Most individuals return to normal activities immediately (although strenuous physical activities should be limited for two weeks post-surgery).

When Will I See My Results After Inverted Nipple Surgery?

There is virtually no waiting time with inverted nipple surgery—results are immediate.
