Breast Revision in Orange County, CA

Over time, many women experience physical changes like pregnancy and weight fluctuations that can cause their implants to look unflattering. Others may encounter medical complications, such as implant rupture or capsular contracture, that can cause their breasts to look distorted. Breast revision is performed to address these issues and restore your confidence in the appearance of your breasts.

Allergan Implant Warning

Allergan, the top manufacturer of breast implants, has announced a voluntary recall of their textured implants following a request by the FDA. This warning was released after researchers found a possible link between breast implants and anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. BIA-ALCL is a rare form of cancer found in the scar tissue around an implant or tissue expander. The FDA’s warning and Allergan’s recall have sparked concern among many women who fear that they need their implants removed. As of now, the FDA does not recommend that patients replace their implants if they are not experiencing complications. Millions of women have received Allergan textured implants, and it is estimated that only one out of 25,000 experience any problems. Please visit our office for a free consultation to discuss your options with Dr. Wald, an experienced Allergan breast implant surgeon. Note; Allergan is offering smooth saline and silicone replacement implants at no cost for those patients wishing to exchange their textured Allergan breast implants for smooth implants.

What Is Breast Revision?

Breast revision is a surgical procedure that restores the appearance of a woman’s breasts or alleviates uncomfortable side effects that may have developed after a previous breast augmentation.

What Can Breast Revision Improve?

Unsatisfying Results

While most women are thrilled with their augmented breasts, unfortunately, some patients are unhappy with the results. Breast revision can modify the size and shape of your implants to help you achieve your aesthetic needs.

Post-Op Complications

Some women experience medical complications after their breast augmentation. Fortunately, breast revision can address these issues to restore the appearance of your breasts.

Damaged Confidence

Many women whose breasts have changed due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or age may feel self-conscious. Breast revision surgery can not only restore your breasts to their former appearance, but it can also improve your confidence.

Common Reasons for Breast Revision Surgery

Capsular Contracture

The most common complication associated with breast augmentation is capsular contracture. It occurs when the scar tissue capsule that forms around the breast implant tightens and begins to squeeze the implants. This contraction of the capsule can cause several issues, from breast deformity to hardness of the breast to pain. The only way to address capsular contracture is breast revision surgery to release the scar tissue and remove or replace the implant.

Implant Malposition

During breast augmentation surgery, your surgeon creates a breast pocket where the implant is placed. Most of the time, the implants stay positioned correctly within the pockets, but in some cases, they move out of place. This is known as implant malposition, and there are several types, including:

  • Lateral malposition: When the implants move to the outer edges of your chest near your armpits
  • Low malposition: The implants “bottom out” and move below the breast crease
  • Symmastia: When your implants meet in the center of your chest and create a “uniboob”

Implant malposition of any kind requires breast revision surgery to correct.

Leaking or Ruptured Implants

Breast implants, whether saline or silicone, are designed to be durable and last for over ten years. However, leaks and ruptures do occasionally happen, and when they do, breast revision surgery is necessary.

Capsular Contracture

There are several reasons you might choose breast revision surgery related to your implants, including:

  • Changing out old implants
  • Going up or down in implant size
  • Changing the type of implant (from saline to silicone or vice versa)

Sometimes, your personal aesthetic preferences change, in which case you may choose to get your implants removed altogether.

Your Breast Revision Treatment

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Wald will examine the condition of your breasts to determine the best option for your procedure, taking into account your physical and aesthetic needs. Ideal candidates must be in good health, nonsmokers, and realistic about their expectations.

Breast Revision Procedure

Breast revision surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using local or general anesthesia.

The extent of your breast revision surgery and incisions will be based on the reason for the surgery, and the procedure can take a few hours to complete, depending on the level of correction needed. Whenever possible, Dr. Wald will use the same incision used for your initial breast augmentation in order to limit additional scarring.

Immediately After

Following your breast revision procedure, you will be asked to wear a surgical garment to support your breasts and minimize swelling. Swelling and bruising will occur but should resolve after a few days. You will be prescribed medication to help with any pain or discomfort.

2 Week After

You will be able to return to work and resume all non-strenuous activities.

6 Weeks After

Most of the swelling and bruising should have resolved, and you can return to your exercise routine and regular activities unless instructed otherwise by your surgeon.

I feel so fortunate to have had Dr Wald as my surgeon. I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Wald and the results of my surgery. He is so talented and so kind (pre and post op). Thank you Dr Wald and to your staff for providing such amazing care. I appreciate you all!

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Revision Surgery

How soon after breast augmentation can I get breast revision surgery?

You should wait at least six months after your breast augmentation (and ideally at least a year) before seeking breast revision surgery. It takes several months for your breast implants to settle into their permanent position, and your body needs enough time to completely heal after your initial surgery.

Can I combine other procedures with my breast revision surgery?

Yes, you may add other cosmetic procedures to your revision surgery. Breast lifts are a common choice for women undergoing breast revision, but you can also choose other types of procedures, including a tummy tuck or liposuction.

Do you reuse my previous implants?

In some cases, your previous implants can be reused. However, in cases of capsular contracture, old implants are not reused. Whether or not new implants are used in your breast revision surgery is determined on a case-by-case basis according to what will offer the best, safest results for you.

Am I a candidate for breast revision surgery?

Any woman who is unhappy with the results of her breast augmentation surgery may be a candidate for breast revision surgery. The best way to determine if breast revision is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Wald.
