Is Male Facial Surgery Safe?

Aging can often lead to the development of jowls, wrinkles, and loose skin around the face, which can cause the jawline to disappear. Many men who wish to improve their facial appearance undergo facelift surgery as it can address signs of aging by removing excess skin and lifting the facial tissue to reveal a younger and more vibrant look. While this surgery is safe, facelift surgery for men requires a number of considerations that differ from a female facelift, making it essential for men to understand the benefits and risks that go into this procedure.

Benefits

Men typically undergo facelift surgery because they feel unsatisfied with their facial appearance due to visible signs of aging. Other men may want to correct facial impurities, such as folds and sagging skin, that have occurred over time due to sun exposure, improper skin care, or stress. Whatever the reason, facelift surgery can rejuvenate the lower face and neck, eliminate wrinkles and folds, and restore a masculine jaw and chin.

Risks

Although facelift surgery is safe, there are a few things all men should consider before undergoing this procedure, including the fact that male facial skin has a greater amount of blood supply than women’s skin. Because of this, more bleeding can occur during the surgery; additionally, a facelift may put some men at risk of developing a hematoma (a temporary pooling of blood that can form under the skin after surgery). Other risks involving facelift surgery may include:

  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Skin loss
  • Prolonged swelling
  • Facial nerve injury
  • Skin irregularities
  • Discoloration

Hair and Beard Growth

Hair growth and facial hair can also play a significant role for men during their facelift procedure. When it comes to a facelift, most men are looking to ultimately reduce the appearance of a saggy neck and jowls on their face, yet at the same time, they want to maintain their original hairline. This surgery requires that incisions be made either along the temple area or inside the ear or hairline to hide scarring; however, men with thinning or balding hair will not be able to conceal these scars easily. Additionally, as deep facial tissues are lifted and suspended and excess skin is removed, it is important to be mindful that your beard will also be repositioned during surgery.
