I Want My Pre-Baby Body Back!

Although they are a wonderful gift, a lot of sacrifices come with having children. A woman’s entire life changes when she decides to start a family. Among the most frustrating transformations involves her body. Pregnancy and breastfeeding wreak havoc on the physique; the stomach expands to make room for a growing baby, the body begins to develop excess fat, and the breasts change in size as they start to produce milk for breastfeeding. After childbirth, the body might not revert to its original, pre-baby state. Many women find that diet and exercise fail to address these inevitable changes. Mommy Makeover surgery is an ideal option many mothers consider.

What Can I Achieve With Mommy Makeover Surgery?

A Mommy Makeover combines procedures for postpartum body contouring. Breast and body procedures can help a woman to reverse the effects of pregnancy to create firmer, more youthful contours. Depending on the characteristics that need to be addressed, Dr. Wald can create an individual surgery plan for your Mommy Makeover.

Rejuvenate Sagging Breasts and Loss of Fullness

Breast Lift Before and After PhotosThe breasts are completely different following pregnancy. Once a woman is finished breastfeeding, she might start losing the volume and shape of the breasts she once had. Breast lift surgery is an ideal procedure performed to restore lost skin elasticity that causes the breasts to sag (ptosis) by lifting them into a more youthful position.

Increase the Size and Improve the Shape of the Breasts

Some women will lose a significant amount of breast volume after pregnancy and notice they no longer have the large, full breasts that they once had. Breast augmentation surgery is designed to change the size and shape of the breasts by inserting saline or silicone implants. With so many breast implant types and incision options, a woman can have breasts that uniquely fit with the rest of her body. Breast lift surgery is commonly combined with breast augmentation to create larger breasts while correcting ptosis.

Flatten the Abdomen and Restore the Abdominal Muscles

A developing baby needs room for growth. The stomach expands throughout pregnancy and often results in weak abdominal muscles, excess tissue, and stretch marks. Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, is designed to restore the abdominal muscles and get rid of the belly “pooch.” An incision is made from hip bone to hip bone just above the pubic line. Through the incision, fat is excised, and weak abdominal muscles are tightened and sutured together. Excess skin is removed, resulting in a reduction in stretch marks. Patients are happy with their slimmer, more toned abdomen.

Remove Unwanted Fatty Tissue

In addition to abdominal fat, many mothers gain excess bulges in other areas of their bodies. Even with a regular diet and exercise routine, unwanted fat is often unresponsive. Liposuction can be performed on any area of the body. Commonly, post-pregnancy women address the stomach, love handles, thighs, and hips. Liposuction involves the removal of excess fatty tissue using a cannula hooked up to a vacuum device. Many tummy tuck patients also undergo liposuction to help them achieve an overall better shape in the abdominal area.

Breast Lift Surgery in Orange County

Am I a good candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?

breast lift surgeryPatients today regularly see me for a breast lift.  Over the years, a woman’s breasts change losing their youthful shape and firmness.  The skin looses elasticity from pregnancy, breast feeding, weight fluctuations, aging and heredity.  Sometimes the areola also becomes enlarged.  Mastopexy is the technical term for a breast lift.  It is important to realize that breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of the breasts or round out the upper part of the breast.  In order to add fullness to the upper breast, a breast implant must also be placed at the time of a Mastopexy.

Best candidates for a breast lift:

  • Women who are physical healthy and maintain a stable weight.
  • Women who have realistic expectations.
  • Women who have lost shape and volume in their breasts.
  • Women who have flat and elongated breasts.
  • Women with breast asymmetry (one breast lower than the other).
  • Women with nipples and areolas pointing downward.

Breast Lift Procedure

A Mastopexy or breast lift can be performed in 3 different incision patterns and techniques. The appropriate technique depends on the patient’s breast size and shape, the size and position of the areolas, the degree of the breast sagging, and the elasticity amount of extra skin.  A patient undergoing this procedure is usually done under general anesthesia.  There are three common incision patterns.  The first is only around the areola (Periareolar Mastopexy), the second incision involves an incision around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease (Vertical Mastopexy), and the third is around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease. Dr. Wald will help in the type of incision pattern that best suits the patient’s desires and ultimate outcome.  Once the incisions are made, the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a natural and more youthful height.  All the sutures are placed under the skin to avoid suture marks and minimal scarring.  Every patient must realize that these scars are permanent, but fade beautifully over one year.  The results of the breast lift are immediate, but over time the breasts will relax giving a more natural appearance.

Breast Lift Recovery

A woman undergoing this procedure will be placed postoperatively in a support bra to minimize swelling and give support to the breasts as they heal.  I generally recommend a week off work and no heavy physical activity for 1 month.  The pain following this procedure is minimal.  However, if a breast implant is placed as well, this will increase the discomfort for a few extra days.  A pain pump is available to help with the discomfort.  The final results of a breast lift will appear over several months as breast shape and position continue to settle.  A breast lift is long lasting, but over time, the breasts will continue to change due to gravity and aging.  Pregnancy and weight gain will affect the results of a breast lift and should be considered before undergoing this procedure.

The average cost for a breast lift varies depending on what part of the United States the procedure is performed.  The costs will also depend on the surgeons experience and location.  The average cost for breast lift varies from $5000.00 to $12,000.00.  It is important to make sure these fees include anesthesia and operating room costs.  Most plastic surgeons offer patient financing plans, so be sure to ask.  In choosing your surgeon, select a surgeon who you are comfortable with and you can trust.

What Is the Mommy Makeover?

mother and childThe “Mommy Makeover” is a catchy nickname for a combination of cosmetic procedures designed to reverse the visible effects of pregnancy on the body. Sagging breasts, stretch marks, excess skin on the abdomen, and fat in new and undesired places are just a few of the side effects of pregnancy, and the Mommy Makeover can remedy all of them.

Those who consider the Mommy Makeover have likely tried every diet and exercise routine available to try to get their pre-pregnancy body back. The truth is, no amount of diet and exercise can eliminate excess skin, perk up deflated breasts, or remove stretch marks. New fat deposits on the lower abdomen and thighs are also often extremely difficult – if not impossible – to remove.

Depending on the results you desire, Dr. Wald offers any combination of breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty), and liposuction to correct the bodily changes that result from pregnancy.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation can significantly boost a woman’s confidence, especially after childbirth. Breast implants will increase the size and improve the shape of a woman’s breasts. There are many choices associated with this procedure, and Dr. Wald will thoroughly inform you of all your options during your consultation.

Breast Lift

Women often have sagging breasts after pregnancy. Sagging can be slight or more severe, with the nipples falling below the breast crease or pointing downward. A breast lift will remove excess skin and elevate the breasts to a higher position. This procedure does not increase breast size, which is why it is often performed in conjunction with breast augmentation.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck surgery targets excess skin and fat in the upper and lower abdomen, resulting in a trimmer, firmer midsection. As a result of pregnancy, many women have weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), which are tightened during this procedure. Stretch marks will also be removed if they are located on the skin that is to be excised.

Liposuction

Liposuction will target all the areas of the body where fat seems to “stick.” The arms, back, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, hips, and flanks are just some of the common areas women choose to firm up with liposuction. The best candidates have good skin elasticity and do not have excess sagging skin. Those who do have a significant amount of excess skin will have better results with tummy tuck surgery.
